Doubling The Dose!

By Ali

Hey everyone, good afternoon! Well, today is FLYING by (a little too fast in my opinion)! I had an 11:45am appointment with my Dermatologist.

A Little History: All throughout High School and College, I had super clear skin.

Freshman year of College with Wicked Bride, we were in a play. I have actually acted in over 15 plays and directed one – bet you didn’t know that! Anyhow, clear skin, right?

Well, starting in about March of 2008, I developed pretty painful and ugly acne on my chin (I get a few in some other spots, but it is on the chin for the most part).

Ignore the silly faces of my two friends (both named John), I think we had a few too many beers. That looks pretty painful, right? I actually have a lot of make up on there to cover it too, it is way worse without it.

I tried basically every over the counter thing you can think of, every bit of advice I got from friends and research and NOTHING! No change! I began to get really worried about scaring! Finally, my Primary care Doctor referred me to a Dermatologist, who is great and actually used to suffer from acne himself.

He put me on Minocycline (50mg), an antibiotic that is very effective for ance, and Retin A – a topical treatment. I have been on those for a little over a year. My acne has gotten better but is still not GONE!

Today- with makeup:

You can see it a little on my chin still. So, today we made the decision to double  up my dosage of the antibiotic in hopes that I will have clear,  beautiful skin when I walk down the aisle in less than 8 months.

I will let you guys know how it goes! Fingers Crossed!

Ok, on to the eats! Well, I wanted to have a bigger lunch today, since I will not get home for dinner until at least 8:30pm, I know awful right?

I had the last of my Butternut Squash Soup that was sent to me by Pacific Foods, you can see my brief review here.

I also had some kashi crackers and cheese.

and a  sliced apple.

All together:

For an afternoon snack, I had some popcorn that was handed out at work today. Our HR Dept. does this thing called “Healthy Monday” where they give out things health related every Monday (toothbrushes, green tea, popcorn). Pretty cool!

Well, I am off to class, see you guys later! have a great rest of your day :)

I am thankful for My wonderful ever so supportive boyfriend Dan. This semester has been very hard on me and he has been so great with helping me and not getting mad when I take out my frustrations out on him because thats what I do when I am stressed!!!

And watch out for Side Effects of doubling your antibiotic!

  2. Julie Says:

I totally feel you on the acne. Mine didn’t start until I hit my 20s and it’s gotten prgressivly worse each year. Once I think it’s getting better I break out like nobodys business. My acne is all on my chin too. It’s more like the sides of my chin and near my bottom lip (not herpes people!!). It sucks so bad!! I tried proactiv years ago with no results, and every otc face wash/zit cream you can think of. I went to a derm and he prescribed me antibiotics and some cream that dried out my skin like whoa. It was $40 a tube too, with insurance! I didn’t like taking the antibiotics, so I stopped. I am now on a mission to end this madness!! I am toying with trying proactiv again or nutrogena skin id, I just don’t want a prescription :( I might be in denial.

Today I am thankful for my parents who are taking me and my sister to the enchanted village and dinner this weekend :) Yes, I am 5 years old.

Ok don’t know how you will feel about this but have you conidered Accutane. I am a pharmacit and have seen people suffer in your situation for YEARS!!!!! There has been no one in my experience who hasn’t had success with Accutane. It can be harsh on the body but it is so worth it. My husband had severe acne all over his back. SEVERE!!!! It did 2 courses of accutane (in his late 20s) and has never had a breakout since. NEVER! Consider it is all I am saying. At least talk about your options with your Dr.

    • Ali Says:

      Susan:

My doctor and I actually discussed that today. He gave me a whole bunch of “homework” that I have to read on it and the side effects. We are going to double my antibiotic dose and if that doesn’t work, maybe look more closely at Accutane. I am going back in a month.

  4. Melissa Says:

I know what your going through with the acne, I have had it since I was 14 (10 years) and it has just been getting worse & worse, nothing works!!! I actually am trying to find a good dermatologist, going to see what my Doctor will recomend….But it defiantly does suck having acne, I have to wear make up every day just to cover it all up, it’s on my chin and lower cheeks….Glad to hear yours has cleared up!

    • Ali Says:

      Melissa:

I would recommend going to a dermatologist. They will give you a lot of options, and have a great understanding of adult acne. My Dr. loves the challenge of trying to clear my acne up, it is his passion. He also suffered from adult acne so he is awesome and totally understands. I don’t know where you are from, but is you are in the Boston Area, shoot me and e-mail and I can put you in contact with him.

  5. meyergirl Says:

I used proactiv for a long time, but now my dermatologist has me on Differin .3% in evenings and Duac in the mornings plus the medicated wash that comes with the Duac. She took me off the antibiotic (Doxycycline) when she prescribed the Duac. Good luck!

    • Ali Says:

      Meyergirl:
Proactive didn’t really work for me, but I know it worked for a lot of people! It is totally worth a try for anyone trying to clear up their skin, I feel like it works more often than not. I guess I am just an exception!

  6. lauradishes Says:

I’m interested in being interviewed! My question: What is your favorite thing to try? New workouts, new restaurants, bars, beer/wine. :)

  7. Jen Says:

Hey Ali~ I just wanted you to know that both Willie and I agree that we have NEVER noticed your acne. Love, Jen

  8. Haleigh Says:

I never had problems with acne when I was in high school either but as soon as I went off to college I started to have some problems every now and then. I always say I am going to go to the dermatologist but then it clears up, I just started on proactiv so I am hoping that it will work for me.

If you need more bloggers to interview, I am interested :)
